100m Hurdles Girls, Round 1

A good start for the Americans, as Dior Hall (Washington, Denver, CO) dominated heat 1, running 13.37 [-1.6] over these 30” hurdles.  That’s #10 all-time on the 30” hurdle list.  The national record is held by her mother, Yolanda Johnson, who ran 13.06 in 1986.

In heat 8, Yanique Thompson (Jamaica) had an easy time of it, running 13.52 [-0.8].  Second was Mikiah Brisco (Baton Rouge, LA), running 13.73 and advancing to semis.

Discus Qualifying – Girls (159-1 is the automatic qualifier)

Lloydricia Cameron (Northwestern, Miami, FL) threw 144-4, 147-7, F and sits 4th in Group A.  She has a good chance to make the final but will have to wait until Group B concludes.  She did advance as the 6th qualifier overall.

Ashlie Blake (Liberty, Henderson, NV) has had better days.  She threw 137-10, then fouled twice, and did not advance.

Shot Put Qualifying – Boys (63-7.75 is the automatic qualifier)

Amir Ali Patterson (Crespi, Encino, CA) threw 62-7, then fouled twice.  He is sitting equal 6th in his qualifying group and advanced as the #11 qualifier.

400m  Boys – Round 1

Jordan Jimmerson (Union Catholic, Scotch Plains, NJ) ran a very fast opening 200 and “paid” in the second half of the race.  He finished third and will have to wait to see if he advances to the semis.

Ryan Clark (Benjamin Banneker, College Park, GA) ran perhaps a bit faster than he had to, running 46.84 and winning by 20 meters.  He advanced easily and bettered his prior PB by .05.

1500m Girls – Round 1 (Top 4 and next 4 fastest times advance to the final)

Anna Maxwell (San Lorenzo Valley, Felton, CA) stayed with pack for the first 2 laps but could not keep up with the leaders from that point on.  It was won by one of the favorites, Tigis Gashaw of Ethiopia won easily in 4:18.55, with Maxwell last in 4:28.92.  She was 8th and had to wait until to see if she was one of the 4 time qualifiers.  As it turned out, she was!

Alexa Efraimson (Camas, WA) ran a very smart race, finishing third and qualifying automatically in 4:23.27.  She stayed with the pack and made sure she knew where she was during the entire race.  She couldn’t “go” with a lap and half to go with the ultimate leader , Dawit Seyalum of Ethiopia who ran 4:17.81.

Long Jump Qualifying – Boys

Isaiah Moore (Cummings, Burlington, NC) fouled on his first attempt, then took advantage of a favorable 2.0 mps wind to get a personal best of 24-4.25 and automatically qualify to the final, the 6th best qualifier overall.

Octathlon 100m

Gabriel Moore (Freeport, FL) had the 3rd fastest time, running 11.28 and worth 799 points.  But he’s 93 points behind leader Karsten Warholm of Norway who ran 10.86.  John Lint (Gahanna Academy, Columbus, OH) is in 18th place, running 11.58 for 736 points.

Octathlon Long Jump

Gabriel Moore got a PB in the third round, jumping 22-7.75 [+0.7].  He stands a fine 6th overall with 1589 points.  John Lint had a jump of 20-11.75 and sits 21st with 1454 points after these 2 events.

High Jump Qualifying- Girls

Alexa Harmon-Thomas (Lawrence Free State, Lawrence, KS) had a great day in the qualifying.  She tied for the lead in her group and qualified =6th overall.  She passed until 5-7 where she made on her second attempt.  She cleared 5-8.5 on her first attempt, then 5-9.75 on her second.  That was good enough to advance her to the final.

400m Girls Qualifying (top 3 in each heat and next 3 times qualify to the semis)

Olivia Baker is the sole American in this event as Raevyn Rogers will concentrate only on the 800m.  Olivia made easy work of it winning easily in 54.41.  She is the World Youth leader at 52.71, having run that at the World Youth trials last month.  Prior to that, her last big meet was the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, where she won the 400m and was part of three winning relays.   Raevyn Rogers (Kinkaid, Houston, TX) has opted for the 800m so the U.S. will have only Olivia Baker competing.

100m Qualifying – Boys (Top 2 of each of the 12 heats advance to the semis)

Kenzo Cotton (Papillon-La Vista, Papillion, NE) got a great start and achieved a personal best, running 10.52, the fastest time of the all qualifiers.  There were 12 heats and Jaalen Jones (Thompson, Mobile, AL) had to wait until the 11th heat to compete.  He had a great start and ran a great technical race, winning in 10.68 [+0.5].
