NSSF Announces Team for Third Caribbean Scholastic Invitational

The National Scholastic Sports Foundation has announced the team members for the Third Caribbean Scholastic Invitational. Twenty-eight male and female student-athletes have been selected, all of whom have recently completed the freshman, sophomore or junior years in high school (see below).

This is the third year that the NSSF has brought a team to the meet, held in Carolina, Puerto Rico (a suburb of San Juan) and partially sponsored by that city. Teams from Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Martinique, Guadalupe, and others are expected to be in attendance.

There are five Virginians on the team, all from the Tidewater area (Norfolk, Hampton, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach), led by Nike Indoor Nationals 200 meter champion Marlena Wesh (Landstown, Virginia Beach). And there are five North Carolinians as well, with indoor national record holder at 60 meters, Wayne Davis (Southeast, Raleigh) the leading hurdler on the team.

Other states represented are Texas and Maryland with four each, Pennsylvania with three, South Carolina with two, and Georgia, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Rhode Island each with one.

The team arrives in San Juan on Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Besides the competition, there are social and cultural activities planned for the team as well. The competition takes place on Saturday, June 14, 2008. The team returns home on Sunday, June 15, 2008.

The team will be accompanied by a staff of 12, including a medical doctor, massage therapist, chiropractor, coaches and support individuals.

The meet is actually open to any high school student in the U.S. or Caribbean. Athletes may choose to come on their own. To register, and for further information, go to the www.nationalscholastic.org website and follow the links to the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational.

The National Scholastic Sports Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation (501.c.3.) dedicated to the promotion of high school and junior age (under 20) track and field and cross-country.
